Helen Mirren and Alden Ehrenreich on Playing Tom Ripley and His Creator Patricia Highsmith

Helen Mirren and Alden Ehrenreich star in A Talent for Murder, a new film directed by Anton Corbijn that adapts the 2014 play Switzerland by Joanna Murray-Smith. The film presents a fictionalized story centered on real-life author Patricia Highsmith, best known for creating Tom Ripley—the sophisticated con-man and serial killer protagonist who appears in The Talented Mr. Ripley and four subsequent novels.

Highsmith, who died in 1995, was regarded as a mysterious and controversial figure throughout her life. While Mirren’s performance draws inspiration from the real author, the film takes considerable creative license in portraying her story. The project reunites Mirren with acclaimed director Corbijn and features Ehrenreich, known for roles in Solo: A Star Wars Story and other major productions.

The adaptation marks a unique approach to celebrating Highsmith’s literary legacy by exploring the enigmatic personality behind one of fiction’s most iconic characters. By blending biographical elements with fictional narrative, the film offers audiences an intimate look at the creative mind that shaped one of crime fiction’s most enduring figures.
