Jagex partnered with a RuneScape-inspired idle game to turn the sequel into an official spinoff
Jagex, the developer and publisher of RuneScape, has partnered with Games by Malcs to make Melvor Idle 2 an official RuneScape spinoff. The sequel will now carry the subtitle “A RuneScape Adventure,” formalizing the game’s long-standing inspiration from RuneScape’s distinctive gameplay style.
Melvor Idle is an idle/clicker game that strips RuneScape’s grinding mechanics down to their “purest form,” allowing players to progress by mindlessly making numbers increase—a core characteristic of traditional RPGs and grindfests like RuneScape. The game has found a dedicated following among players who enjoy the meditative, incremental progression that defines the RuneScape experience without the time commitment of the full MMO.
With Jagex’s official partnership and branding support, the company aims to help Melvor Idle 2 reach a larger audience while maintaining the indie game’s distinctive identity. The partnership demonstrates Jagex’s recognition of Melvor Idle’s appeal to RuneScape fans and shows the publisher’s willingness to support fan-created or inspired titles that expand the broader RuneScape ecosystem.
