Doom Creator John Romero Revives Xbox-Canceled Game At New Publisher

Romero Games, the independent studio founded by Doom creator John Romero and his wife Brenda Romero, will bring its canceled AAA shooter project to market with a new publisher. The game was originally in development with Xbox Game Studios before being shelved during the company’s significant 2025 layoffs.

The studio, known for titles including Gunman Taco Truck, Empire of Sin, and Sigil episodes for the classic Doom games, had been preparing to make its ambitious leap into AAA shooter development. However, Xbox’s mass layoffs in 2025 resulted in the cancellation of the project and subsequent staff reductions at Romero Games itself.

John Romero recently revealed the project’s revival in an interview with Video Games Chronicle, confirming that the studio has secured a new publishing partner to complete and release the game. While specific details about the new publisher and the game’s scope remain unclear from the available information, the announcement represents a significant recovery for the studio after facing the setback of the Xbox cancellation.
