Dune Officially Returns With New Release This Week Ahead of Denis Villeneuve’s Next Movie

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three releases December 18, concluding his film trilogy with an ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1969 sequel Dune Messiah rather than adapting the original 1965 novel. Trailers have revealed significant departures from Herbert’s source material.

To prepare audiences, a graphic novel adaptation of Dune Messiah releases November 3, providing context for Villeneuve’s reimagined narrative. The graphic novel is written by Brian Herbert (Frank Herbert’s son) and collaborator Kevin J. Anderson, who have authored approximately a dozen Dune prequels and sequels since 1999’s Dune: House Atreides.

Herbert and Anderson’s expanded Dune universe continues influencing contemporary adaptations. Their Great Schools of Dune book series provided creative inspiration for HBO’s recent prequel series Dune: Prophecy, demonstrating their substantial impact on the franchise’s ongoing development across multiple media formats.
