FBI Issues Surprise Official ‘Pokémon’ Trading Card Warning
The FBI’s Newark office has issued a warning to the Pokémon trading card community about a sophisticated scam targeting card shops and vendors. According to the alert, at least seven shops have fallen victim to a fraud scheme in which bad actors attempt to purchase high-value cards without actually spending any money.
The scam operates through a deceptive payment method: fraudsters approach shops to buy expensive cards and initiate payment via contactless mobile payment systems. The transaction is designed to fail, but during this process, the scammers are able to leave the shop with the high-value cards in their possession without completing the purchase.
This FBI warning comes amid growing concerns about criminal activity in the lucrative Pokémon card market. The trading card game has seen exponential growth in recent years, with rare cards fetching hundreds or thousands of dollars, creating both legitimate collector interest and opportunities for fraud. The announcement follows a previous Department of Justice investigation into what authorities described as the biggest Pokémon card heist ever recorded.
The warning represents a notable escalation in law enforcement’s involvement with the Pokémon TCG community. The FBI’s intervention highlights how the high-value nature of collectible cards has attracted criminal attention, threatening the integrity of local card shops and the broader trading community.
