Film Company Wants to Hypnotize People So They Can Watch Classic Movies for the First Time Again
French film company Pathé is conducting an unusual experiment to allow cinephiles to experience classic films as if watching them for the first time. The initiative, called Pathé Rewind, uses hypnosis to erase participants’ memories of beloved films before screening them again.
Pathé partnered with hypnotist Victor Kraemer to facilitate the experience. Thirty film enthusiasts were selected based on film preferences, personal motivation, availability, and informed consent. Each participant undergoes a one-to-one online hypnosis session with Kraemer, followed by another hypnotic session just before an in-person film screening on a big screen.
The experiment raises interesting questions about memory, perception, and how films impact audiences differently on first viewing versus subsequent viewings. While the promotional nature is acknowledged, the underlying concept—whether hypnosis can genuinely create a fresh experience with familiar media—represents a novel approach to film appreciation and marketing. Registration has closed, indicating strong initial interest in the unique opportunity.
