PlayStudios closes Tetris Block Party after cutting 177 jobs and shuttering four studios

Las Vegas-based PlayStudios has shut down Tetris Block Party, a mobile game that launched in January 2025 and generated an estimated $8.1 million in in-app purchase revenue from 5.6 million downloads (not including ad and webshop revenue).

The closure is part of an aggressive corporate restructuring. In March, PlayStudios announced its “Reinvention” program, which cut $29 million in costs. A second restructuring phase called “Renewal” followed over the summer, resulting in the closure of four of the company’s nine studios and the elimination of 177 jobs, with targets to save an additional $39 million.

The decision reflects PlayStudios’ broader strategic realignment as the company stabilizes operations following these significant cutbacks. While Tetris Block Party achieved a reasonable player base during its roughly 10-month lifecycle, the company has determined that maintaining the title does not align with its restructured priorities. The closures underscore the ongoing volatility in mobile gaming, where live-service titles face uncertain futures dependent on corporate financial performance and strategic direction.
