One World of Warcraft: Forever player is working on a first-person mod that’s a love letter to retro RPGs like Hexen and Morrowind
A World of Warcraft community modder named Arhkain is developing ‘Retro Forever,’ an ambitious first-person conversion mod that reimagines Blizzard’s MMO through the lens of classic fantasy RPGs like Morrowind and Hexen. The project draws inspiration from the visual and gameplay aesthetics of 1990s and early 2000s retro RPGs, featuring period-appropriate animations and a first-person perspective.
Arhkain’s motivation stems from a longstanding desire to experience Azeroth from their character’s point of view, a feature that existing WoW options haven’t adequately supported. Unable to find suitable alternatives within the game, the modder took matters into their own hands to create a solution that captures the feeling of classic immersive RPG experiences.
The developer has been transparent about the project’s progress through a series of development vlogs, documenting the technical work and creative vision behind the transformation. Notably, the mod is being developed without reliance on generative AI, emphasizing handcrafted work and traditional modding techniques. The project represents the type of passionate community-driven innovation that keeps older gaming aesthetics alive within modern MMO frameworks.
