The Baby in Yellow: how a 48-hour game jam hit 400m downloads

“The Baby in Yellow,” an indie comedy-horror game developed by Dundee-based studio Team Terrible, has achieved extraordinary viral success with approximately 400 million downloads across platforms. The breakdown is notably mobile-heavy: 320 million Android downloads, 80 million on iOS, and just 100,000 on Steam.

The game’s meteoric rise began entirely organically through content creator influence. After its initial release as an entry in the GMTK 48-hour game jam—inspired by a friend’s recent parenthood—smaller streamers began picking up the title, their coverage quickly attracting larger, well-known content creators. This grassroots enthusiasm propelled the game to viral status, with nearly all player discovery driven by streamer coverage rather than traditional marketing.

The commercial success has been remarkable for the small studio. Co-founder Greg Lee reports Team Terrible now generates approximately £2 million annually from the title. Lee emphasized the success was entirely unexpected, noting the studio had participated in numerous previous game jams without achieving comparable results.

The Baby in Yellow exemplifies how streaming culture and organic community enthusiasm can elevate a small indie title to unprecedented reach, particularly on mobile platforms where discoverability typically depends on algorithm-driven recommendations or viral trends.
