It looks like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 had fewer active players at launch in the US compared to last year’s Black Ops 7
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched with fewer active players in the US compared to its predecessor, Black Ops 7, according to data published by market analysis firm Circana. The finding adds weight to ongoing speculation that the long-running franchise may be losing momentum with audiences.
Circana’s analysis tracked player engagement using its proprietary Player Engagement Tracker, which monitors activity across Steam and PlayStation in the US, as well as Xbox globally. Analyst Mat Piscatella released the comparative data showing the disparity between the two titles’ launch window performance.
While the franchise has dominated the console and PC gaming space for nearly two decades, recent years have shown signs of potential fatigue. Though comprehensive statistical data for each Call of Duty release over several years is not publicly available, the observable trend in player engagement suggests the series may be facing a challenging period. This data point from Circana represents one of the clearer metrics available for tracking the franchise’s performance in the competitive live-service shooter market.
