Final Fantasy 7 Remake Was the Hardest to Develop in the Trilogy, Says Director

Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed that the first game in the trilogy was the most challenging installment to develop. In an interview with YouTube creator mistermv, Hamaguchi explained that establishing the foundation for the entire FF7 Remake series presented unique developmental obstacles that proved more difficult than subsequent entries, which could build upon the established framework.

Square Enix is preparing to release “Revelation,” the final chapter of the trilogy, scheduled for 2027. The upcoming title is expected to be grander in scope and scale compared to FF7 Remake and FF7 Rebirth. Hamaguchi’s comments suggest that creating the first game—which had to balance faithfully recreating the beloved original while innovating for modern audiences—required more intensive development effort than later installments that benefited from the established foundations and systems.
