Fortnite’s Plan To Survive GTA 6 Is Finally Revealed: Make Everything Free

Fortnite is launching a limited-time promotion to retain players as Grand Theft Auto 6 approaches its release. Starting with the Treasure Hunters mini-season on November 1, the battle royale game is offering rare in-game tokens that grant temporary access to completely free Item Shop purchases.

The promotion centers on the Fortnite Item Shop Token, a collectible item that players can discover in chests during any battle royale match, regardless of game mode (Build, Zero Build, ranked, or unranked) or team composition. When obtained, the token grants “Pirate Shop Access,” which allows players to claim any cosmetic or item from the Item Shop at no cost for a 14-day period. Squad-based gameplay is noted as particularly beneficial for securing these tokens.

This move is a direct competitive response to GTA 6’s imminent launch, with Epic explicitly recognizing the need to combat player attrition to Rockstar’s highly anticipated title. While Fortnite is already a free-to-play game, the Item Shop typically requires real-money currency purchases for cosmetics and battle pass content. By temporarily removing this monetization barrier for a subset of players, Epic hopes to increase engagement and reduce churn during a critical period.

The Treasure Hunters event appears designed to encourage continued play while maintaining an element of exclusivity—players must actively search for the tokens rather than receiving guaranteed access. This strategy balances aggressive retention incentives with the underlying free-to-play monetization model that generates Fortnite’s revenue.
