Mason Thames Cast as Robin in DC’s Dynamic Duo Movie, DC Studios Boss Says Actor Is ‘Obsessed’ With the Role

Mason Thames, known for How to Train Your Dragon, has been officially cast as Dick Grayson/Robin in DC Studios’ upcoming animated film Dynamic Duo. The casting was confirmed by DC Studios co-head Peter Safran in a conversation with Collider, putting to rest months of speculation and rumors.

Safran emphasized that Thames was genuinely enthusiastic about the role, actively pursuing it rather than being simply recruited. “Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson,” Safran explained. “He came in and auditioned the shit out of it, and was awesome.” This commitment from the actor aligns with DC Studios’ broader philosophy of working with “volunteers and not recruits”—individuals who are genuinely passionate about their roles within the studio’s projects.

The Dynamic Duo film represents an ambitious animation project scheduled for release in 2028. The movie will feature two iconic Robins: Dick Grayson, who later becomes Nightwing, and Jason Todd. To bring these characters to life, the production will employ a hybrid approach combining multiple animation and practical effects techniques, including miniatures, puppetry, animatronics, and CGI.

This casting is part of DC Studios’ broader slate of Batman-adjacent projects, including the live-action film The Brave and the Bold and a Poison Ivy television series.
