What Rami Ismail learned with his return to game development
Rami Ismail, the acclaimed indie developer and industry advocate, has returned to active game development after a six-year absence. The move marks a significant return for the influential figure who co-founded Vlambeer with Jan Willem Nijman in 2006.
Ismail departed from Vlambeer in 2020 and sold his remaining shares in the studio in 2024. Rather than stepping away from the industry entirely, he spent the intervening years working as a consultant and advisor to smaller studios, with particular focus on developers in emerging and underrepresented regions.
Now returning to directing his own project, Ismail is preparing to launch Australia Did It: End-of-the-World Railway Defense Business. The decision reflects his growing desire to create again after years of supporting other developers. Ismail’s return to development comes as the indie scene continues to navigate industry challenges and consolidation pressures.
