Zach Cregger’s Sci-Fi Masterpiece Made One Brilliant Change to Its Monster: ‘It Just Looks Creepier’
The VFX Supervisor for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film is setting the record straight about the “Pedestrian” creature that became the subject of online speculation. Following the film’s release, a viral video emerged showing acrobatic performers tied together at the waist and practicing the movements of the mutated, cartwheeling mass of limbs that appears in the movie. This led many viewers to assume the creature was largely a practical effect with some CGI enhancement.
However, VFX Supervisor Kevin Smith clarifies that this assumption is incorrect. The Pedestrian is entirely a CGI creation. The viral motion capture footage was simply an early exploration and visualization of how the creature should move during pre-production—not the actual technique used to film the final monster. Smith explains that the motion test was one of several ideas explored before settling on the final CGI design. This clarification dispels misconceptions about the filmmaking process while highlighting the extensive planning that went into bringing the horrifying creature to life.
