Best Buy’s Midnight ‘Zelda’ Switch 2 Console Release Is Already Intense
Nintendo’s special Triforce-themed Switch 2 console, released alongside The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, has proven extremely difficult for fans to obtain. Despite multiple restocking attempts, the special-edition hardware consistently sells out within seconds of becoming available. Automated bots have exacerbated the shortage by securing inventory faster than human customers during online sales windows, contributing to widespread scalping.
In response to the ongoing scarcity, Best Buy announced a midnight launch event on November 4 for the Zelda game, special Switch 2 console, and matching Pro Controller. Pre-order customers can arrange local store pickup during the midnight release window, offering an alternative to constantly-refreshing online queues.
However, shifting sales from online channels to physical midnight launches introduces new complications. Rather than bots dominating purchases, in-store midnight lines could create crowd management and logistical challenges at individual Best Buy locations, potentially transforming the scarcity issue from an online inventory problem into a physical retail coordination challenge.
