Critical Role’s upcoming series with Hololive gave Matt Mercer ‘a deeper understanding and appreciation’ for vtubers

Critical Role, the acclaimed tabletop roleplaying series, is collaborating with Hololive, a major vtuber agency, on a new six-episode miniseries called Shattered Legends set to debut later this month. The crossover unites two communities that share a core foundation: both rely on skilled performers bringing animated stories to life through voice acting and character performance.

Matt Mercer, a prominent member of Critical Role, reflected on the collaboration with PC Gamer, describing how working with Hololive’s vtubers gave him “a deeper understanding and appreciation for the skill and talent that each of these performers has.” Mercer noted that vtubers fundamentally operate as voice actors—a craft well-established within Critical Role’s ensemble.

The partnership represents a significant crossover between two distinct entertainment communities. While tabletop RPG streaming and vtuber content have grown into separate phenomenon in recent years, Shattered Legends seeks to bridge these audiences by combining Critical Role’s established narrative expertise with Hololive’s distinctive performance style and talent.
