Fortnite’s Ultra-Rare Pirate Shop Token Hunt Sparks Wave of Profiteering and eBay Listings
Fortnite’s One Piece crossover event introduced the Pirate Shop Token, an ultra-rare item that grants players two weeks of free access to nearly everything in the game’s item shop. Players who claim the token can keep items permanently on their accounts, though real-money offers, gifting services, and Battle Pass rewards are excluded.
The token’s exceptional value has spawned an unintended secondary market. Players are sharing exploits to locate the item, selling automated farming tools, and offering paid services to help others hunt for the token. Some are listing tokens for sale on platforms like eBay. Epic Games has yet to disclose official drop rates, fueling speculation and intensifying competition.
The situation highlights tensions in live-service monetization. While the Pirate Shop Token was intended as a special promotional reward for the treasure-hunting themed season, its scarcity and value attracted opportunistic players operating outside official channels. The black market activity demonstrates how high-value, limited cosmetic rewards can inadvertently create exploitation opportunities in free-to-play games—a growing concern as developers attempt to balance player engagement with monetization strategies.
