Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series Officially Wraps Up Filming
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Assassin’s Creed has completed principal photography and is now moving into post-production. The series, first announced in 2020, finally entered active development in 2025 when Halo screenwriter David Wiener and writer Roberto Patino joined the project. With filming now wrapped, the production team can focus on editing, visual effects, and other post-production work required for the television release.
The journey to bring Assassin’s Creed to the screen has been lengthy, with the original announcement coming six years before filming completion. The extended pre-production period reflects the challenges of adapting a complex video game franchise into a live-action series—a task that requires balancing the lore and themes of the source material with compelling television storytelling.
This Netflix adaptation follows the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender, which served as a cautionary tale for the entertainment industry. In that film, Fassbender’s character Cal Lynch was placed in the Animus to experience memories of his 15th-century ancestor Aguilar de Nerha, a Spanish assassin. Despite substantial production values, the movie was poorly received by critics, earning only an 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The failures of previous adaptations have likely informed Netflix’s approach to the series. By enlisting experienced television writers and extending the development timeline, the streaming giant appears to be taking a more deliberate approach to translating the Assassin’s Creed franchise to screen. The series remains without an announced release date, though post-production timelines typically span several months to over a year depending on project scope.
