Nexus Mods introduces new AI disclosure rules, but won’t ban AI mods outright

Nexus Mods, the largest PC modding platform, has introduced mandatory AI disclosure requirements for mod uploads, requiring creators to declare whether and how generative AI was used in their work. The site is also implementing a user-facing toggle allowing visitors to filter out AI-generated and AI-assisted mods from search results. However, the platform will not implement an outright ban on AI-generated content.

Site co-owner Victor “Foledinho” Folmann explained the rationale: “An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process but will prevent people from mentioning its use.” The approach mirrors Valve’s strategy on Steam—transparency through mandatory labeling rather than prohibition. Existing mods will receive notification prompts requiring classification under the new system. Folmann acknowledged the need for clear labeling so users can make informed decisions about which mods to download, though the platform recognizes not all creators will comply with disclosure requirements.
