Final Fantasy Producer Reveals Star Wars Inspirations in the Franchise

Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase has revealed in an IGN interview that Star Wars served as a creative inspiration for key elements of the long-running franchise, including character names and specific game systems. Kitase explained that he was initially hesitant to openly acknowledge these inspirations, fearing the franchise would be perceived as a direct copy of the Star Wars films. Consequently, he deliberately avoided making explicit references to the sci-fi saga in earlier Final Fantasy titles.

Despite his caution, Kitase confirmed that Star Wars did influence certain aspects of the series’ design. According to the interview, this inspiration extended to nomenclature and gameplay mechanics, with Blitzball—the aquatic sport from Final Fantasy X—cited as one example of a Star Wars-influenced system.

The revelation offers insight into the creative development of Final Fantasy, which has been a cornerstone of Square Enix’s portfolio for nearly 39 years. The franchise has itself become a major influence on the gaming industry, with recent releases like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy’s design principles—notably, Expedition 33 won Game of the Year in 2025.

Kitase’s comments highlight how established franchises like Star Wars have shaped game design across generations, and how developers navigate the balance between drawing inspiration from beloved sources and establishing unique identities for their own work. The Final Fantasy series ultimately established itself as a distinct entity, becoming influential enough to inspire other award-winning titles.
