Marvel’s Wolverine Has Lost Its Momentum, And Sony’s Numbers Show It

Sony has officially announced that Marvel’s Wolverine has sold 2.4 million units as of November 4, 2026. The PS5 exclusive launched in September as the month’s best-selling game and delivered the highest launch-month dollar sales for a Sony-published title since Helldivers 2 in February 2024. However, momentum has cooled significantly since launch.

While 2.4 million units might appear impressive in isolation, the figures underperform compared to other Sony first-party releases, notably Insomniac’s previous title, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game’s trajectory suggests a steeper-than-expected decline from its strong September debut.

The sales disclosure came as part of Sony’s financial update, in which the company raised its gaming business sales forecast by 6% and similarly increased profit projections by 6%. Sony attributed these improvements primarily to increased sales of non-first-party game software titles—a euphemism widely understood to reference the anticipated impact of Grand Theft Auto 6. The company also cited improvements in costs and revenue from network services including PlayStation Plus.

The Wolverine figures highlight a pattern where superhero action games, regardless of strong launches, face retention challenges in an increasingly competitive market. Sony’s decision to attribute gaming growth projections to third-party titles rather than its own exclusive may signal concerns about first-party game performance going forward.
