PlayStation sees record high player numbers and increased revenue for Q2 2026, and a lot of that success is down to Marvel’s Wolverine
Sony reported record-breaking results for its PlayStation division in the second quarter of fiscal 2026, with monthly active users across PS4 and PS5 reaching 127 million in September—a seven percent year-on-year increase marking the highest player engagement in PlayStation history. The strong performance prompted Sony to raise its full-year forecast for the games segment by 15%, now expecting ¥1.87 trillion (~$11.8 billion) in profit.
Marvel’s Wolverine emerged as a major driver of this success, surpassing 2.4 million units sold and significantly contributing to first-party software revenue. Beyond game sales, Sony saw growth from network services, underscoring the platform’s expanding ecosystem. While hardware revenue declined due to lower PS5 unit sales, the console still sold 2.6 million additional units during the quarter, bringing lifetime PS5 sales to 93.7 million.
Sony attributed this performance to its “aggressive investment in entertainment,” reflecting a strategic shift toward content-driven growth. The company noted that active play time increased alongside the player growth, indicating deeper engagement rather than just wider adoption. These results demonstrate PlayStation’s continued market strength and the effectiveness of first-party blockbuster titles in driving both player acquisition and revenue growth.
