PS5 Is Closing In On 100 Million Sales, Despite Getting More Expensive

Sony has announced that PlayStation 5 sales are closing in on a major milestone, with the console reaching 97.9 million units sold lifetime. The company shipped 2.6 million PS5 systems during the second quarter of its 2026 fiscal year (ending September 30), positioning the console to surpass 100 million sales by the next financial report.

However, the sales trajectory shows clear signs of deceleration. Sales in the recent quarter dropped significantly compared to the same period last year, when Sony moved 4 million units—representing a decline of 1.4 million units. This gradual slowdown reflects the console’s maturity, having entered its sixth year on the market.

Despite the softening sales, Sony’s gaming business remains robust. While the PS5 has become more expensive since launch due to global component shortages and rising memory costs, the company’s gaming ecosystem is performing strongly through higher digital revenue and a large active user base. For context, the PS4 had shipped 103 million units at the equivalent stage of its lifecycle, putting the PS5 on a competitive trajectory.

Sony stated it is in ongoing discussions with manufacturers to secure sufficient memory allocation for the next fiscal year and expects hardware sales to remain profitable going forward. The company’s confidence suggests it believes the console can maintain momentum as it approaches and passes the 100 million milestone.
