Before Dark Souls there was King’s Field, and five hours into brilliant homage Queen’s Domain, it’s already one of my favourite games this year
Queen’s Domain, developed by Freshly Baked Games, is a first-person retro-fantasy action RPG designed as a contemporary homage to King’s Field, FromSoftware’s influential but long-dormant series. King’s Field holds significant historical importance as the direct precursor to the modern Soulslike genre, having laid the groundwork for acclaimed titles including Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring.
Queen’s Domain combines the retro-fantasy aesthetic and first-person perspective characteristic of the original King’s Field games with modern gameplay sensibilities. The title explicitly celebrates its source material while maintaining contemporary design principles intended to appeal to today’s players.
According to Eurogamer’s review, the homage proves effective, with the critic reporting that after approximately five hours of gameplay, Queen’s Domain had already secured a place among their favorite games of the year. This early assessment suggests Freshly Baked Games has successfully captured what made King’s Field compelling while creating an experience that stands on its own merits.
