Despite hardware worries and rising costs, Sony says PlayStation 6 development is on track and “progressing as scheduled”

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 6 development is progressing on schedule, according to statements made by Sony CFO Lin Tao during the company’s financial results briefing on November 5, 2026. The announcement comes as the PlayStation 5 approaches 100 million units sold and enters its sixth year of active service.

During the briefing, Tao stated that the next-generation console is “progressing as scheduled” and that Sony will make “solid progress” in preparing for the platform in the coming fiscal year. The company intends to “attach great importance to a new platform and make the necessary investments for that,” signaling Sony’s commitment to the successor hardware despite industry concerns about rising development costs.

While Sony has confirmed active development, an official announcement of the PS6 is not imminent. Tao indicated that more information about the console will come “at an appropriate time in the future,” meaning fans should not expect any reveal in the near term. The company’s financial results also highlighted strong performance in other divisions, including a boost from the box office success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which contributed to raising Sony’s annual profit outlook.

The confirmation of PS6 development represents the company’s shift in focus toward next-generation hardware, even as the PS5 continues to perform well in the market.
